For writing, I seriously suggest couch-surfing.

Well, it's more beach than trees, but the coast around and north of Bodega Bay is fairly deserted, very wild and lovely, and only a couple of hours drive.

But there's not much in the way of food - very expensive, or deli, not so much in between.

I'm quite fond of Hendy Woods State Park, on Highway 128 in the Anderson Valley. It has a campground, if you're the camping kind.

I'll second Bodega Bay but also suggest Clear Lake or maybe even something outlying the Tahoe area before winter starts to set in. Hell, its september.. maybe things have started changing colors up that way... you won't really get that with anything costal. Of course, choosy Writers choose Monterey.

Hey, just because I was born there doesn't mean I know anything about the place! ;)

I really don't know. If there's fall action going on the only places I can think of without a crapload of evergreens is inbetween Sacramento and Tahoe. I really don't know about Shasta and their normal kind of tree's and such.

On second thought, I don't know how much it costs to stay in this area or if they have camping or anything but I have really fond memories of this area. IIRC, they have a train that snakes through all the vineyards and orchards and I'm sure that their season is starting to wind down and would be nice to people watch, nature watch and write.
