what is so attractive about cruel people?

The mistaken assumption that there must be something cool or terrific about them that warrants them being an asshole? Its gets us to look longer and stand still long enough for the cruelty to leave a mark.

true - though i think they have more in common...

i am drawn into thinking about this - so many of the kindest people i know also are known as cruel by others - and then there is the whole mean / villian as sexy issue

it all came up because i was thinking about how sexy robert mitchum is - and how many people i have talked to think that he often looks cruel or mean in films...

so my train of thought went off on why does that aesthetic (and usually not the behavior) appeal to me so strongly

A slightly different view, coming from the "Why are villains so often sexier than heroes" question:

Because cruel people, especially *verbally* cruel people, though not always, sometimes act the way we want to be permitted to. One person's cruel cutting remark is another's just revenge for previous slights, etc.

Plus, the villans usually have a better wardrobe.
