south carolina?

i have a pal who recently moved to south carolina so she could be near her son. she's in her late 20s, loves punk, rockabilly, tom waits, etc. and she is starting to lose it a bit as she is only finding in her words "racist rednecks" that make the fucked up town in michigan where we grew up look as cosmopolitan as SF or the east village.

so to my friends who have lived and travelled all over - where in south carolina do our sorts of people tend to ramble around?
any recommendations will likely act as a life preserver.

and nope - i don't know which part of SC she is in except that she's near the coast.

During my several years in North Carolina, I spent almost no time in SC. However, I did meet some goths and punks from Columbia, and have heard that it is a decent town for weirdos (in a good way).

I fled fast and far from SC for basically that reason and more, and have not been back since 1980, so I'm afraid I'm not much use in terms of where and who is nifty there now. All I can offer is sympathy.

Do post if she finds anyone worthwhile there - it's nice to be surprised every so often.

Greenville. There's warm & welcoming poetry there, as well as in Columbia.I think they have some yearly arts festivals there.We just had Southern fried in Columbia and one of the venues had the most beautiful bathroom I'd ever seen & great vegan/veggie food, too. Place called Tranquility.There's GOT to be stuff in Charleston as well, though I hear it's really bourgie there.

Charleston is sort of like New Orleans with more money, but without the fun. It's a beautiful place, though.
