south carolina?

emchyi have a pal who recently moved to south carolina so she could be near her son. she's in her late 20s, loves punk, rockabilly, tom waits, etc. and she is starting to lose it a bit as she is only finding in her words "racist rednecks" that make the fucked up town in michigan where we grew up look as cosmopolitan as SF or the east village.
so to my friends who have lived and travelled all over - where in south carolina do our sorts of people tend to ramble around?
any recommendations will likely act as a life preserver.
