it is italian. OMG, i just love it so much. sitting in the window (at night, in rain or fog) looking at all the commuters going by and the people hustling from here to there. nice glass of wine (i recommend the sangiovese!), bread, waiters speaking in lilting english because they're all italian, amazing, amazing food ... dessert can be tiramisu (shared). the tables are tiny enough to be romantic, and nobody cares if you stay a couple of hours. just make sure you get the window though or else the noise from the rest of the place carries around.

Zuni is high on my list -- they have a lot of neat two-person tables, including side-by-side tables, and their roast chicken for two is a great dish to share.

Eastside West - I love feeling all lovey dovey surrounded by skinny Marina chicks looking for someone to make them feel worthwhile.

Gary Danko - Soooo decadent! Soooo delicious! Cheese course! Extra desserty bits! And they give you breakfast too!!

Frjtz at Hayes and Laguna. I like the paintings and the romantic Euroish ambiance. Also, The Revolution on 22nd inbetween Mission and Valencia (but it's more of a cafe instead of a restaurant, even if they serve food there.)

Aziza.

Incredible food (sexy finger-foods), decadent atmosphere, comfy furniture (including booths and small tables in the back), staff that pays just the right amount of attention...

Bistro Amour on Lombard and Scott. Awesome cheap french food. the workers may be little over-friendly but in a way that will impress your date.

Farallon. It's my favorite everything restaurant. Though I'm not big on the entrees & generally stuff myself on their wicked appetizers. The interior is amazing. The atmosphere is amazing. The service is fantastic.

Da Flora, Da Flora, Da Flora!
Dyke owned Venetian restaurant in North Beach. Charming, AMAZING food, not snooty, intimate. Pretty pricy. Red interior, dim lighting, fabulous decor.
Here's a good little informal review.
A similar write-up.
