Mine was SPILLANE back in the 80s. Listened to the whole thing once, then shelved it for a year and a half until I could catch up to it.

Now I've got like 50 Zorn CDs, have seen him perform live many times, and even tried to get him to do a residency at Yerba Buena while I was there (a story I'll tell you next time I see you in person).

THAT is a story i want to hear. i have only 10 or so zorns. had more, lost in a divorce. i tend towards the masada jazz side of him, or the avante noise and not so much the angry noise...

when i had extra $$ i used to go to amoeba and pick up tzadik records, just to find new folks i liked. from that i found chris browns Lava and Fred Frith. yay.

i wish zorn would come back to the area to play though...

There're a bunch of great artists on Tzadik. I've found the Oracles series a pretty consistent font of good stuff, like Xtatika and Mephista (not to mention some essential archival stuff by Shelley Hirsch).

Figure it's only a matter of time before Zorn hits the Bay Area again - he's pretty tight with the community here (though I imagine he's a bit busier in New York these days, managing the Stone).

last time i saw him was at slims in 1998
maybe i am not looking in the right places for listings....

Come to think of it, there was a performance festival in Berkeley in June for which I got a mailer - Zorn conducting two nights of his music, and a tribute to Terry Riley that he performed in. Didn't get to any of the gigs, though.

And I'm pretty sure there was a Hemophiliac (Patton/Mori/Zorn) gig at Slim's the beginning of '04, but I missed it as well.
