TONIGHT! SAN FRANCISCO LESBIAN GAY BISEXUAL TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY CENTER CELEBRATES CALIFORNIA SENATE VICTORY

(SAN FRANCISCO - September 1, 2005) The following is a statement from Thom Lynch, Executive Director of the San Francisco LGBT Community Center:

Join us tonight, when the LGBT Community Center hosts a celebration of today's historic victory in the California Senate approving same-sex marriage.

Today's victory marks an amazing historical achievement -- by far the most significant action ever taken by an American legislative body in support of LGBT civil marriage rights.

Ours is a civil rights movement on the march. There are battles we will win and battles we will lose, but the ultimate victory is assured. The flow of this movement is ever forward and we will not rest until all of our LGBT community have the same civil rights as any other American.

We salute Equality California for their great work on this bill, written by former Center board member, Assembly Member Mark Leno. Representatives of Assembly Member Mark Leno and of Senator Carole Migden will be attending. All San Franciscans are welcome to join us.

While I agree with you to a degree, there is also a need for a lot of people to "keep moving" and to celebrate the high points at times like this.

People deal with disaster in different ways. I'm sure there will be a moment of silence or some sort of acknowledgement of the events and hopefully even use it as an opportunity to get donations.

i can only hope. i think if the email had referenced, "while our thoughts go out to" or something it wouldn't have bothered me so much

as it was worded it felt sort of bougeouise. like we don't have to care since this doesn't effect us. which i see a lot right now, and i think is a direct result of the people struggling right now being poor people and people of color, whereas for 9/11, it was a cross section of mostly middle class business people and so more people cared. i doubt this same email would've gone out then without a word acknowleding the national crisis that we are in

You make several excellent points there. And It hink you're totally right. Another friend of mine was watching a news snippet where they were commenting about how the vast majority of thosein need are people of color- and then they cut to two white, blondhair and blue eyed jocks who lost their frat house.

Like there's a disconnection to reality somewhere.

have you also seen the AP articles where when the description is with white folks, they are referred to as finding supplies, and when it is people of color they are referred to as looters?

It's strange. It *is* a victory, and should be acknowledged as such. But the timing is also a reminder of what a long way we still have to go.
