so last night i gt the "Surprise" from Rooster. Awesome amazing dinner at Cajun Pacific and good fucking gumbo and teeny tiny restaurant and love love love. it was teh awesome. as the night progressed it was decided that i needed to go see the oakland monsters of accordion show since i had gotten so gaga and alive and happy feeling from friday night. i dropped rooster off at home and zipped to oakland. the show was at 21 grand. cool space. it was all ages. rarely have i seen so many under 18 folks actually show up for an all ages show. it was rad. though by 1030 there was an air of tired in the room and i could see the young faces getting droopy. it was mostly chairs set up and all seating, so the dancy dance rowdy wasn't there  so much. which made me very very very sad. jason webley - the last performer - got people on their feet by the last song and that was awesome. one of the guys from Survival Research Labs blew up an accordion. That was also awesome. I find that I really do prefer the more traditional reinterpretation of accordion music. ie i am not so much with the covers of old rocks songs and the jokey side of it. that can be fun but really give me the waltz based or the clap alongs or the sad and beautiful dirges. love it. LOVE it. got home early and while bolinas was intended today - film must get done and house must get cleaned since the semester starts for rooster tomorrow.

la la la la

good mood.

:O!!! i thought you knew. i don't know why i assumed that but i did. damn. sigh. well - it's an annual event. it originated via the accordion place in oakland that 21 grand is connected to. i bet they have a mailing list...

Yay! I'm glad you liked the show so much that you went again! I find the covers of rock songs fun if it's not turned into an overused gimick, but I'm more partial to performers like Jason Webley and Mark Growden who write new, fun songs for the accordion and encourage audience participation.

I'm going to try very hard to go to the Webley show in October, possibly even turning it into a late bday celebration.

:) the covers for me are fun as a one off - but i love the squeezebox unironically and so love the more traditional sounds better. it was good to see you there!!

P.S.

A few Jason Webley tunes can be heard here (and some samples of many more songs):

"Map" is one of my favorites. I'm also fond of "Eleven Saints" (which he actually performed at the show).
