Suspect in custody in SF hit-and-run

(03-20) 11:29 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- A man allegedly ran down and killed a pedestrian in the Mission District early today after the two got into an argument, police said.

The suspect attempted to flee after the incident but was caught by police, said Sgt. Neville Gittens.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. when the suspect, whose name has not been released, was driving southbound on Valencia Street and attempted to make a left turn eastbound onto 16th Street, Gittens said.

"The victim and his friend were crossing the street -- we don't know what took place exactly ... but words were exchanged, and the suspect stopped his car and got out," Gittens said. "More words were exchanged, then the suspect got back in his vehicle."

The suspect began driving toward the two pedestrians, Gittens said, at which point the victim began punching the car. The pedestrians took off walking northbound on Valencia Street, Gittens said, but the suspect drove his car up onto the sidewalk and hit the victim with the vehicle, throwing his body into the air.

The suspect drove away but tried to park nearby, Gittens said. Police set up a perimeter of the area and were able to detain the man, he said.

The incident is being investigated by the department's homicide division, Gittens said. The suspect's name will be released when he is formally booked on criminal charges, he said.

about a month ago, i was in the city with a company truck running an errand. i had to scoot back to the east bay. anyway, so i was trying to get over to oak st. from the western addition area. it was dark outside, and raining. i ran a yellow onto oak st. making a left turn. cruised over to the right lane with my blinker on and vaguely heard a wimpy horn blaring emphatically. i had apparently cut off a guy on a motorcycle. or maybe not, because he was far behind me. i really didn't understand why he honked like that at me. i returned the favor (and flicked him off) as he drove past when i scooted one lane left to let him go by. then, as i turned right onto the octavia entry ramp for 101, he follows me. he gets in the lane next to me, pulls up to my passenger window and pounds his fist on the window. then, logic must have hit him as he realized that once the light turned, he'd be on the highway. regardless, i couldn't believe the level to which it had escalated so quickly. i really felt that if i'd rolled down the window, it would've escalated to him dragging me out of the vehicle to beat me up. or maybe things changed when he saw that i was a girl. i have no idea.
