rolling by

i keep wishing
for waving oceans
of cornfields and wheat
to magically appear
as I drive

20
30
minutes
out of town

only to find repetitive
urban squalor
without the charm
of the post-industrial
factory landscape.

it's mcdonalds
tract housing
postage stamp lawns
endlessly duplicated
where I am driving in circles
due north

out of one office window
a chicago styled
vintage streetlamp
and a small tree
that no one told
not to turn

reminds me
of an October day
in small town america
when the wind
was just right
