This is interesting in a number of ways. I've been a bit out of the comic loop for awhile, so thi sis the first I've seen of it, but DC editorial did a pretty fine job of having Rene Montoya come out, the reactions of her family, feelow officers, etc. If Gotham Central had been a better comic overall, I might have continued to follow it for that character's sake.

DC has had a rather mixed (though certainly better than Marvel) record at presenting balanced gay characters. They broke significant ground by introducing the couple of Midnighter and Apollo, two Warren Ellis characters that in many ways echoed and also surpassed Batman and Superman, and even won awards for their initial depiction by Ellis from organizations such as GLAAD. But for awhile and under different writers and editorial teams the characters become more cliched. I am very interested to see how Grant Morrison handles them when he takes over writing the Authority in September.

But I digress from the original point regarding the new Batwoman. None of the articles say who the creative team on the character will be, and that determines so much of the quality with which any character is presented. There are quite a few I think could do it with much sensitivity and aplomb. These days, the Batman titles are far darker and grittier (god help me, did I seriously use THAT tired comic descriptive? Yes, I'm afraid I did.)than the colorful, almost slaptick books that most recall from the early sixties.

But I question the boots. The Birds of Prey have all graduated to more substantial, combat worthy and very rivithead stylish boots. Can't imagine why Batwoman would wanna go all retro with the footwear. Surely they can't think that stompy boots would make her look too dykey? (I say with mild chagrin/irony.)
