for waving oceans
of cornfields and wheat
to magically appear
as I drive
10
20
30
minutes
out of town
only to find repetitive
urban squalor
without the charm
of the post-industrial
factory landscape.
it's mcdonalds
tract housing
postage stamp lawns
endlessly duplicated
where I am driving in circles
due north
out of one office window
a chicago styled
vintage streetlamp
and a small tree
that no one told
not to turn
reminds me
of an October day
in small town america
when the wind
was just right
for waving oceans
of cornfields and wheat
to magically appear
as I drive
