ok it's becoming clear to me that i need to invest in footwear. and i don't mean just go buy shoes because all of the shoes i am drawn to have no support and leave me with shin splints after a night of happy stompy. so here is what i am looking for. can you help me interweb? i need shoe help.

i like ballet flat style shoes. a modified maryjane is ok, but i prefer if it be a maryjane its strap is more old school ballet shoe styled than traditional maryjanes. i have fallen out of love with keens stylistically. kenneth cole reaction pinch my feet in ways that seem more suited to folsom than to shoe pavilion. but really i am just looking for a cute ballet flat esque shoe that doesn't look horribly boring and in fact maybe even looks kinda quirky and weird but still has enough support that it doesn't just feel like i am walking barefoot.

ideas?

for the purposes of gathering information - cost and materials are not an issue.

I can be of no help. I can't wear ballet flats. They make my shins hurt. I need inches of platform rubber to be happy.

Okay, but wait. Do you like these? I seek to understand your needs even if I can't meet them. Is that what you mean by old school maryjane?

It's weird flats (true flats) make my shins much, much worse.

My most comfortable shoes (besides Keen's Targhee sneakers) are my Doc Mary Janes. They are even more comfortable than my Keen Calistoga Mary Janes -- more rubber between me and the road. But it doesn't sound like the shock absorption thing works for you.

Poor monkey!

i think i am open to trying your foam between me and the road theory.. i have a pair of low wedges that are kinda nice to my feets. but when the heel is too high then it all goes wrong.

here we are again - just from you - please with the more advice?

I don't have any personal recommendations, but I got interested (yay distraction from finals!) and random internets research tells me that Privo shoes might be good:

For instance, the Spangle has ballet-strap type deals and one of the reviews says "They are so comfortable, really great for walking around the concrete sidewalks of NYC" and someone says that she waits tables in the Oso.

Not a problem! Actually, Alley and I ended up postponing until today for other reasons, so if you're feeling enough better, you'd be welcome to join us in the BEast around 4 or 5!
