John Zorn's Moonchild at Great American Music Hall

zorn show last night - while it was his compositions - had precious little actual zorn. i loved the show. i wish that mike patton would've held more of his jazz percussions and a bit less of the rock crowd pandering regurgitation noises - but you know - that's a talent too. my preference just leans on the jazz side. trevor dunn and joey baronne were hot fucking shit on fire though. reminds me of when i would see dave lombardo play with... was it with cobra? back at slims. so amazing. rooster and i ended up making pals with a really nice and cool photographer from glasgow pre show and that was a really good way to warm up for the show. we were right in front and i got to have the percussion set my heartbeat for most of the show. i love that. but upon encore # 2 but absolute orgasm moment of the night. john zorn conducting. the energy on stage when that happens. watching the interplay and the schoolkid grins and focus on every players face. that's when i see the heart of the music. the meat of it. being in the front always allows me a more visceral experience so i don't just get stuck in my head appreciating the math rock elements of avante. but when i can see that interplay - it's when it all comes together and i feel like a schoolkid with the performers. waiting with baited breath for what they'll do next.

i saw cobra twice at gamh. i think that was in the early 90's? mike patton joined them for the encore if i remember and i was thinking, why is a rock star trying to sound like yamasuku eye(sp?) from the boredoms...then it turned out zorn wasn't just starfucking, patton was really into the all these years....and i used to hate patton b/c he took over vocals from chuck mosley of faith no more and i thought he was trying to be a lame imitator of anthony keidis. in my teen angst i saw faith no more's drummer at an iggy pop show and drunkenly got mad at him for losing mosley, gotta say the drummer was a gentleman b/c i would've punched me out.

wait, is mosley a popular name or could chuck be related to walter mosley?

i do like / love some of the vocal acrobatics that patton can and does do - but it's like - the juxtaposition with his pretty voice and the avante is a lot more interesting to me than just the yelling and gutterals. he's totally put his money where his mouth is though in terms of his passion for this zorny jazz world.

oh, you'll see me @ acker reading, it's a cherrybleeds event, which i believe we're doing more of, thanks to our forward thinking poetry editor...i think i'll be "bartending". he and mk chavez have done most of the work, i'm just putting money up for it and used every promo contact i had to get the word out. i'm excited, this has been in the pipeline for a while.

after i gotta pop over to the knockout for veil veil vanish and death of a party. AND 400 blows is playing tonite too...

completely forgot to check if i have cherry bleeds stickers left to give out.
