Indoor fireworks
Can still burn your fingers
Indoor fireworks
We swore we were safe as houses
They're not so spectacular
They don't burn up in the sky
But they can dazzle or delight
Or bring a tear
When the smoke gets in your eyes

Lots of favorite quotes. Don't know your #2, but it reminds me of the song, "Your Red Wagon." (As sung by Ella Fitzgerald, is how I know it.)

When you make your bed,
Remember you'll do the lying there when you butter your bread don't expect me to eat your share.

So the gal you left me for is tired of you,
don't call me, babe, I'm tired too...
Just keep dragging your red wagon along.

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

[Lawrence has just extinguished a match between his thumb and forefinger. William Potter surreptitiously attempts the same]

William Potter: Ooh! It damn well 'urts!

T.E. Lawrence: Certainly it hurts.

Officer: What's the trick then?

T.E. Lawrence: The trick, William Potter, is not minding that it hurts.

my first-ever poet friend (and the person who inspired me to start writing) sat around a campfire with me the first week i knew her, and recited a short poem she wrote about fire to me. it described fire's necessary benefits and unfortunate destruction, and ended with:

"we never learn. we never learn."

i wish i remembered the whole thing.

i think we were fourteen.
