Appointment Type: Provisional. Provisional appointees must successfully participate in the civil service examination process when it is given and be reachable on the adopted eligible list in order to be considered for a permanent appointment.
Program Background: The San Francisco Arts Commission is the City agency that champions the arts in San Francisco. We believe that a creative cultural environment is essential to the City's well-being, and our efforts integrate the arts into all aspects of City life. The Cultural Equity Grants Program was created to foster the cultural and artistic diversity of the City, including all of its cultures, small and mid-size arts organizations, and historically underserved communities.
Position Description: Under direction from the Director of Cultural Affairs, the Program Director manages the Cultural Equity Grants Program and staff. The Program Director manages the grant making process, including: developing application schedules and materials; selecting, convening and facilitating panels of artists and administrators to review applications and make award recommendations; presenting those recommendations to the Arts Commissioners at public meetings; providing information to the public about the program; and assisting applicants in developing their applications by providing feedback. The Program Director administers the program's budget, including both grant and administrative funds, in accord with City administrative and financial procedures; develops and maintains policies, procedures and guidelines; and collaborates with the Director of Cultural Affairs, the Deputy Director and other Program Directors to develop policy and direction for the agency as a whole. The Program Director maintains good communication with members of the arts community through periodic meetings; and consults with constituent arts organizations on development, administrative and programming issues, providing advice and referrals. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in arts administration, public/business administration, education, literature, architecture and design, art history, fine arts, or other fields closely related to functions performed by a public arts agency;

AND

Three years experience within the past ten years performing high-level professional duties in arts administration, community arts, or arts education. Grants administration experience is highly preferred.
Special Condition: Three years experience in the selection and review/oversight of programs to receive grants related to the arts or philanthropy.
Desirable Qualifications:
Management and supervisory experience
Familiarity with San Francisco Bay Area arts community
Familiarity with, and ability to work effectively with, diverse and traditionally underrepresented communities
Strong ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with diverse audiences
Experience with financial and budget management and planning
Experience with government financial and accounting procedures
Ability to use computer applications including word processing, e-mail, database, spreadsheet (Excel) and the internet
Collaborative approach to working with staff, colleagues and constituents.
