question for the peanut gallery

emchythings are looking up. busy monkey at the work. but, i want to pick your livejournalling brains. a certain someone is having a very important bday coming up on new years day. i am looking into vacation rentals, getting out of town, etc.
so questions are:
1. what is your usual resource for getaway places that don't break the bank?
2. when you had big milestone bdays, what did you do to mark it or make it extra special
ther eis an extra complication since people usually want to celebrate the new year in their own way, and especially this year it would suck to have the bday overshadowed...

(sea ranch is high on the list of possibilities, trying to find just the right options though)
