how is asheville these days by the way? i haven't been there - but have heard a lot and thus it is high on my list of relocation potentials...
i worry about the whole job and diversity piece of it though
what's your take?

i big, juicy heart a'ville.i'm in hotlanta, actually, but a'ville is like the sister place. i would love to relocate there someday when i'm a little older or more librarian worthy.it's effing gorgeous, too.
but yes, jobs are pretty difficult there unless you're a healthcare person.everyone i know there has or does social service, telemarketing, or other service-type stuff (which is what my g-friend used to do there).luckily, there's a really fantastic culture of art there to keep everyone sane and it's liberal enough that they fend off homogenization from the downtown area pretty well.
the annoying parts are the drop-outs, the homeless hippies, and it is veryvery white, though i get the sense from african americans i've met there, that it makes them tighter.i know the queer community is similar. they solve their problems because they have to, in that not-urban kind of way.it's also an environment of community with a stake in working things out, which is nice.
the tourists are also annoying.
the people are really nice. freaks are accepted and welcomed.it's fucking gorgeous.the food & restaurants are fabulous & it's cheap.
plus, it's close to here >}:-)
