I find it easier to contemplate Dr. Phil if I imagine that he's a drag king.

Someone on another list/lj comm I watch mentioned this as though it were a good thing -- and this was a trans=/trans-supportive group. Ugh. I cannot conceive of one good thing Dr. Phil has done... but then, it's true I do have my own issues with obstreperous, pandering, asshole therapists (even if I don't include my mother's ex-husband in that number, but of course he tips the scales... )

i watched part of the first part - and the few take aways

they found a pre-op transguy who had only been looking into the surgery hormone things for a "few months" and had not done any reading like stone butch blues or other sort of experiencial research to know what things might come up socially / culturally. dr. phil just recommended that he do some more homework before having surgery. my bet is that the guy felt too on the defensive to be clear and eloquent about what research and homework he had done so far. i was surprised though - dr. phil didn't call him she at all in any of the show i watched.

as an example of "what can happen" the did a brief Gwen Araujo mantage. her mother was there to talk to the guests. and in the montage - it was all eddie and he. one friend referred to her as Gwen - but still was all about he. very sad.

and then i stopped watching all together

So transpeople (and queers, for that matter) should spend their entire life being someone they're not because some asshole(s) might decide to get violent?!? I suppose that means that women should also quit dressing up for clubs because some testosterone factory might decide to rape them.

Fuck you, Dr. Phil.

It was god awful. He ought to be ashamed of himself. He clearly has no understanding of our community whatsoever, let alone "expertise." It's frightening to think of how many people in this country take his word as the truth. I'm writing his dumb ass a letter.
